In one album, Don McGlashan (& The Seven Sisters - mustn't forget the band) have, I think, doubled the number of songs about comets that I'm aware of.
There was R.E.M.'s 'Kahoutek', and Greg Johnson's 'Comet Song'.
Now there's 'Marvellous Year' and 'Make Yourself At Home' at well.

    This:

showed up on my other journal's friendsfriends (here: http://springheel-jack.livejournal.com/2836842.html).
(I link to the source as much for the comments there as anything.) I was interested to see who the friend who the poster was a friend of was, as there was a friendsfriend by a completely different route commenting.

Starting this morning, not long after I got up, and continuing for some while, I was earwormed by "Over & Done", by Marshmallow. I didn't remember, but according to iTunes it's one of 16 tracks I listened to last night, so I presume that's where it came from. That, and yesterday being my last day in the old job, I guess.

My official A-League hierarchy of hating. That is, when these teams play each other, I'll be cheering for the one further down this list (unless another result is better for the Phoenix, of course). So, I really don't like the top three, quite like the bottom three, and am ambivalent about the two in the middle.

    1) Queensland Roar - each of the last two seasons we've had a player who just wasn't the same after the Roar kicked the stuffing out of him. And they're a decent footballing side too, so they don't need to do that.
    2) Newcastle Jets - similar to the above, but not as many hard bastards, and less talent. More cheating. Had some tinny luck against us, especially last season.
    3) Sydney FC - not nearly as good as they still try to make out. More cheating.

    4) Perth Glory - some sympathy, some pity, some contempt.
    5) Central Coast Mariners - Decent bunch of players, for the most part (I'd probably be ranking the 'Nix one side or the other of here if I wasn't a Wellingtonian).

    6) Melbourne Victory - some of the better players to watch, mostly an entertaining team - subject to the occasional bout of playing crap.
    7) Adelaide United - a class team - and the play in the right kind of strip too (/liverpool fan).
    8) Wellington Phoenix - last season we had some better players, and a whole bunch of worse ones (the trouble with having to recruit a whole team in a hurry when the other teams have already been going two years). This year that was rationalised, and we've had a good solid base of a team, but not particularly exciting. A bit of icing on top for next season and we should go well.

    Buskers.

There's time to catch maybe up to a verse of whatever they're doing, as you wander past through the underpass on the way to the train.

The one yesterday was doing a fairly creditable go at 'Private Universe', on acoustic guitar. Except, I've always heard the line as "every night about six o'clock the birds come home to the palms to talk", whereas he sang 'farm' for 'palms', which is probably right, I haven't been bothered to go look it up though.

The one today had an electric guitar, and I thought (as I walked closer/past, listening) 'that sounds like a Paul Kelly song'. I was kind of right - it was "It Started With a Kiss" - a version as different to either Hot Chocolate's or Paul Kelly's as those are to each other. Not a song you can go far wrong with, whatever you do to it.

I'm finally starting to feel better than I have for the last week. This cold progressed much the same as the last one (started off with uncomfortable symptoms (throat etc) but still feeling well, with energy, overall - through to yesterday, when the congestion etc had just about gone, but was quite wiped out generally). Another early night now I think.

I think my favourite Fall lyric (in terms of a quotable expression/line/couplet, as opposed to the lyrics of a whole track) is (from "Idiot Joy Showland"): "Your mystic jumpsuits cannot hide / your competitive plagiarism." - it manages to encompass a couple of MES's major themes (a Fall tribute/covers band would *have* to be called The Plagiarists, I would think) - and I like the way 'plagiarism' is pronounced as if the first 'i' isn't there - play-GA-rih-ZIM.

Oh look, another ignorant subeditor (or whoever writes the headlines to go with each story):
Too heavy for the stalk: newborn weighs in at 6.4kg
(I must admit to thinking that 'the stalk' might be what a particular kind of baby-weighing machine is known as, before I realised.) [Edit: I see they've corrected it to 'stork' - someone must've told them...]

Also, a couple of days ago, we were out pre-buying prizes for the Scrabble tournament, for whenever we end up holding it. The stuff on the table of really cheap stuff at Briscoes each had a label with it, saying what was wrong with it to be so cheap. There was the set of saucepans missing all the lids, and a couple of pans as well; the pedal bin with dents in the back; and the set of knives which was missing the "craving knife". Yes.

Seasonal greetings to anyone reading this!

Everything's wrapped and labelled, just have to retrieve what I bought at the supermarket at the Wgtn railway station yesterday from my freezer, then head up the hill to pick up my parents from their place, then proceed to my brother's place.

The track before this one was Che Fu's "Rain on the Roof", so iTunes is obviously keeping an eye on the weather.

Have acquired 2 Christmas presents for people, and have figured out what to do for the remainder (most of which I will do before the weekend is finished). Christmas has come up with a rush this year, what with Sydney and the way things have been at work. At least all the fighting through all the other Christmas shoppers isn't too strung out, and the weather's not as hot as it usually is.

    Today.
Slept in a bit. Had to drive as far as Pori to get a train that would get me to work on time. Got that far and decided to drive all the way - assumed the carpark at work would be quieter than it has been, and it was. Got some things done at work. Went and moved my car from underground to the outside carpark (so that I wouldn't have to go back inside after the game). Left my bag in the car (so that I wouldn't have to find room for it in my stadium seat). Wandered off and ate something, then wandered further to Borders and almost bought 2 or 3 books (but didn't buy any). Went to the game. We won! Drove home. Watched the following game on TV (who'd be a Melbourne fan, eh?).
    Yesterday.
Confirmed that I'll be starting a new job at the end of January.

Last night I got home a bit later than planned, but still had to do laundry, so was later to bed than I should have been. Tonight, I got home earlier, got the ironing done I should have done the previous night, and am still going to be later to bed than I should, with no real excuse this time, besides trying to catch up on reading, emailing, commenting, etc (which isn't really going to happen, fully, as some of it's been undone for too long now to be catch-uppable).
